meditation-connecting-with-true nature“We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selves to be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the spiritual connection that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness and affection.” ~ Brene Brown

Sometimes to survive the world that we live in we sever the connection between our true nature and the self we present to the world. At some point in our lives this way of living stops serving us. What tends to happen, is the universe  keeps us in a holding pattern of the same situations with different faces, until we decide to dare to do something different.  It may feel hollow, lonely, and isolated. Here are 5 ways of being to reconnect with your true nature and to begin living authenticity.

1) Listen to your gut/ intuition.
Frequently when we are disconnected from our true selves we stop listening to our gut feelings or our intuition.  When we discard living in our true nature, we disconnect from our higher selves and tend to live without being mindful. Our egos tend to take over, and we try to”make things happen”.  Then we can get into situations that do not serve our highest good. Instead of bulldozing our way through life or living in sloth before we make pertinent decisions, we need to check in with our higher selves.

When was the last time that you listened to that small voice that said “something is not right here” or “hey you need to do this”?  Your gut /intuition shows you what is safe, who to trust and what you need to do, but you have to be open to listening to it, so that it can guide you, and you can have a new experience.  Remember fear keeps us small. Your intuition frees you from patterns which are no longer serve you.

Trust your intuition. It is the best friend you will ever have. ~Judith Orloff

So how to you connect to your intuition? Here are some suggestions:

  • Start listening to that voice within; the one that is always right. You know the one I am talking about.
  • Keep a journal of your dreams,  the synchronicities in your life, and notice when your intuition is right.
  • Use guided imagery to connect with your higher self

2)  Spend time in silence.
So much of our lives we are “on call” constantly looking at our phones, looking at status updates and connecting with others. It can become overwhelming and addicting to be constantly on.

It is important to spend at least 20 minutes a day where you are in silence and disconnected from the outside world.

Some people may find this scary and don’t want to do this. If this is the case for you, it is possible that you maybe avoiding connecting with yourself because you are afraid of what you will encounter. The more that you run from yourself, the more damage you do to yourself. Feelings will not kill you.

It is our lack of addressing them that leads us to have mental illness and physical ailments. For this reason it is imperative to spend time in silence.

What does sitting in silence look like? It can be as simple as connecting with your breath, stretching, meditating, and using acupressure to tend to our own needs. If you ask your body what it needs and listen, it will tell you.

3) Reconnect with your inner child.

“Do stuff. Be clenched, curious. Not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention. It’s all about paying attention. Attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.”
~Susan Sontag

The part of us that we tend to ignore even more than our intuition is our inner child. It is the part in us that needs to play, have fun, and feel raw emotion. When was the last time that you did something for that child? When was the last time that you sang, danced, or colored?

What did you enjoy when you were young? Try making a play date with your inner child by doing something that brought you joy when you were young.  Here is a list of activities. Pick one and try practicing it sometime this week, and see if your energy is reinvigorated:

  • Go to park, lay down and stare at the clouds.
  • Swing on the swings.
  • Go down a slide.
  • Take a dance class.
  • Sing Karaoke.
  • Color in a coloring book or make art.
  • Ride your bike.
  • Play tag or play hide and seek.
  • Draw on the sidewalk with chalk.
  • What would you add to this list.. What can you come up with?

4) Visit nature.

Visiting nature is very grounding and helps you to reconnect with your true nature through observing the natural rhythms of life. Our lives have become hectic and overloaded with stimulation and communicating.  Nature is peaceful and elicits the relaxation response in you. It is easier to breathe and just be.

Nature teaches you that everything is impermanent and that there is a cycle of life. It show you how to live in harmony with other creatures by you observing the ecosystem. It reminds you how small you are and how there is a bigger world out there other than what you feel is “important”.

Nature reminds me that I am just one creature in this vast place that we call earth.
